Indian Railways Sanctions ₹175 Crore Project to Expand Electric Locomotive Maintenance Facility at Raipur

India News – Indian Railways has approved a ₹175-crore infrastructure project to create additional homing facilities for 250 three-phase electric locomotives at the High Horse Power (HHP) Diesel Shed in Raipur, under the South East Central Railway (SECR). The initiative is aimed at enhancing locomotive maintenance capacity, supporting the expanding electric fleet, and improving operational efficiency across the railway network.

The project is part of Indian Railways' broader strategy to modernise maintenance infrastructure in line with the rapid electrification of its network and the increasing demand for both passenger and freight services.

Boosting Maintenance Capacity

The approved project will significantly expand the maintenance capabilities of the Raipur depot by providing additional homing facilities for electric locomotives. In railway operations, homing refers to assigning a locomotive to a designated shed that serves as its primary maintenance base.

The homing shed is responsible for carrying out scheduled maintenance, routine inspections, safety checks, repairs, and overall upkeep of locomotives. Strengthening these facilities will ensure that a larger number of electric locomotives can be maintained efficiently, reducing downtime and improving fleet availability.

The expansion will also help Indian Railways make better use of the existing infrastructure while preparing the depot to accommodate future technological upgrades and fleet expansion.

Indian Railways has been rapidly expanding its fleet of electric locomotives as part of its long-term goal of creating a cleaner, more energy-efficient transportation system.
