Indian Railways Approves ₹206 Crore Kavach Deployment on 680 Route Kilometres of Northern Railway

India News – In a major push towards modernising railway safety infrastructure, Indian Railways has approved the installation of Kavach Version 4.0, its indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, across 680 route kilometres (RKm) of the Northern Railway's Delhi Division. The project, sanctioned at an estimated cost of ₹206 crore, will cover the Rewari–Delhi and Shakurbasti–Bathinda sections, including their feeder branch lines.

Strategic Expansion of Indigenous Safety Technology

The newly sanctioned project is part of Indian Railways' larger strategy to deploy Kavach on high-density and strategically important rail corridors. These routes play a vital role in handling both passenger and freight traffic, making them a priority for advanced safety interventions.

With the installation of Kavach Version 4.0, the selected sections of Northern Railway will benefit from enhanced train protection capabilities, allowing safer and more efficient movement of trains. The inclusion of feeder branch lines ensures that a wider network receives the benefits of the advanced safety system, further strengthening railway operations in the region.

How Kavach Enhances Railway Safety

Kavach is India's indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection system designed to significantly improve operational safety by preventing accidents caused by human error. One of its key functions is preventing Signal Passed at Danger (SPAD) incidents, where a train inadvertently crosses a stop signal, potentially leading to collisions.

The system continuously monitors train movements and automatically applies brakes whenever it detects unsafe conditions. It also enables trains to operate safely at their maximum permissible speeds while maintaining safe distances from other trains. In addition, Kavach supports reliable train operations during adverse weather conditions such as dense fog, where visibility is significantly reduced.

By combining real-time monitoring with automatic intervention, the technology provides an additional layer of safety for both train crews and passengers.

Beyond safety, the deployment of Kavach Version 4.0 is expected to improve the overall efficiency of railway operations. Automated monitoring and braking systems reduce dependence on manual intervention, helping maintain punctuality and streamline traffic management on busy corridors.
